Name:

Karen Worsham

Your position:

Middle School Teacher

Testimony of salvation:

It was during a church service that I recognized my need for salvation. I don't remember the sermon, but the conviction I felt is remembered to this day!  Fortunately, my parents were believers and were able to lead me in accepting Christ as my Savior.

Church:

I am an active member of Saylorville Church where I minister on the worship team by singing and playing the piano.

College/Degree:

BS- Bible and Elementary Education, Pillsbury College

Additional Training/Endorsements:

EL/MS Language Arts Endorsement

5-8 MS Mathmatics Endorsement

Family:

For the last 25 years, I've had the privilege to be married to my husband, Jeff.  We have 2 children, Tyler and Casey.  Tyler graduated in 2012 from Grandview Park Baptist and Casey was in the first graduating class of Grand View Christian School (2015).

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not teaching?

Some people (especially students) might not believe it, but I do have a life outside the walls of the school!  I cook with my husband, play the piano, sing on a worship team, and LOVE watching volleyball!  I love to laugh with friends and it's been fun developing my skills behind the camera.

How long have you been in your job at Grand View?

This is my 13th year at Grand View.

What brought you to GV or why did you decide to work here?

I knew I wanted to be a part of this school when I heard about the outreach programs they were trying to implement.  Besides the outreach programs, Grandview also started football and we were so excited to get that program off the ground!  After 10 years of teaching in  Illinois, we felt God leading us to Des Moines.  Although I didn't have a teaching job right away, I waited for God's timing and he brought me here in 2005.  Grand View will always be special in my heart.  It was here that my children got to study under teachers that loved them. They found lasting friends and they grew in their knowledge of Christ. But most of all, I get to teach students more about God without any fear of retribution!

What is your favorite thing about your job?

In 1993, we moved to Illinois when I was pregnant with our first child.  After only being there for a month, I delivered Tyler. Little did we know that God would bless our family with a visually impaired child; it changed my life! The support that we felt from out church family helped me through a difficult and confusing time. Through the years of developing an educational plan for him, I realized that I had a passion to teach students, knowing that education can be easy with the proper tools.  I loved seeing the light bulb go off in their heads because they got it!  Whether it's through math or English, education doesn't have to be a struggle!

What is your guilty pleasure?

One thing that most people don't know about me is that I consider ice cream a "comfort" food.  It makes me think of my home when I was growing up. We would make our own homemade ice cream from cream off of our whole milk and salt from our water softener!  When my mom would make her homemade hot fudge, I would just die from happiness!  So now, every time I eat it, it's a little bit of home making it's way into my life!
